Glen Celtic summed up their season on Sunday afternoon in a 2-2 draw with Moylough at a sun-drenched Moylough Sports Field. This was no less than their 10th draw of the season and perhaps a fitting way to close off a campaign which started last August.
Missing a number of regulars, Celtic were forced to take to the field with 10 men. Micheal Geraghty who a week earlier had decided to open a gate with his head won the contest to go in goal while Keith and Bob just about made kick-off due to the fact they were still in bed at around 10:55 (presumably not together). It was always going to be an uphill struggle and despite a string of good saves from Geraghty, Glen Celtic went one down early in the first half. Celtic didn't throw in the towel however and some good defending from Micheal Burke in a small lake on the left side of the pitch allowed Celtic to grab an equaliser as a persistent Niall Gannon found the net. Celtic then took the lead in the second half as David Keegan found the net with a well taken strike from outside the box. Then just when it looked as though a fairy-tale ending might be on the cards, Moylough went down the other end to ensure a share of the points.
This was a good performance by the lads who showed up! Celtic finished the league in fifth spot and full credit must go to Mick Comer and Brendan Mee for the effort they have put in. If the same effort was put in by all, the league title would have been won by Christmas! Celtic maintained a serious defensive record for most of the season and for a time were on top of the table. Meanwhile in Roscommon, neighbours Ballymoe FC were unlucky to lose out on the league title as they were defeated 3-2 by Roscommon Town. They have secured promotion however and we wish them all the best in the Premier Division next year.
Full team: Micheal Geraghty, Gerry Davis, Fergal Donlon, Sean Kenny, Micheal Burke, Bob Molloy, Keith Cunniffe, David Keegan, David Kelly, Niall Gannon
Glen Celtic lost out to Ericsson's in the second round of the Roscommon cup at Athlone this afternoon. On a pitch which felt like it was bigger than the parish of Glan the Celtic lads put in a big effort but couldn't find the net. Celtic had a couple of goal chances early in the first half but a well taken Athlone goal in the first half was to be the difference between the sides.
Full team: Derek Miskell, Damian Miskell Fergal Donlon, Ronan Conneally, Aaron Hynes, David Keegan, Keith Cunniffe, Micheal Geraghty, Paul Beatty, Simon Stachurski, Gerry Davis
Subs used: David Kelly
Glen Celtic's hopes of finishing third in the league suffered a blow on Friday night as they went down to St. Johns.
Glen Celtic hosted KC Celtic in round 1 of the Roscommon cup and came away with a resounding win.
Kieran Gannon opened the scoring in the first half to give Glen a 1-0 at half time. Manager Mick Comer reminded the players that the one thing they were lacking was goals and with this in mind Celtic grabbed another to go 2-0 up. This was cancelled out almost immediatlely and with a score-line of 2-1 it looked like KC were going to be allowed back into the game. However unlike in previous games the Glen lads stepped up a gear and some good defending allow them to push on and score no less than 4 more goals.
Six different goal scorers on the night gave Mick Comer and Brendan Mee plenty to be happy about.
Full team: Derek Miskell, Fergal Donlon, Kieran Gannon, Ronan Conneally, Aaron Hynes, David Keegan, Keith Cunniffe, Micheal Geraghty, Jarro Placek, Paul Beatty, Niall Gannon
Subs used: Simon Stachurski, Damian Miskell
With a late venue change Celtic hosted Castlerea under lights at church street.
Freddie Gannon, playing his last game of the season for the club was both hero and villian on the night as after scoring the opening goal, went on to find the net at the other end of the pitch. Both sides had chances but Gannon found the net early in the second half with a well taken strike after the Castlerea keeper pulled off a good save. With around 20 minutes left a ball was crossed into the box and an attempted clearance by the Clonbern man found it's way to the net.
The club is losing three player this week as Freddie Gannon, James Gannon and Brian Naughton have been sold by the club to play overseas. Agents for the three have refused to comment on the amounts that have been paid.
Celtic's incredible 6 month unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday as they went down 1-0 to a strong Ballymoe side.
In a game that could have went either way Celtic came very close to scoring when Keith Cunniffe lobbed the keeper only for the ball to go over the bar. Ballymnoe went up the other end of the field and got a free kick which found it's way to the back of the net. Celtic pushed forward to snatch an equaliser in the dying minutes but it was not to be as the home crowd saw their side hold out for a win. Celtic were missing a couple of regulars and although the loss was a crushing blow to their chances of winning the league, they remain in second place with 5 games remainging.
Full team: Derek Miskell, Kieran Gannon, Ronan Conneally, Sean Kenny, Aaron Hynes, David Keegan, Keith Cunniffe, Fergal Donlon, Micheal Geraghty, Freddie Gannon, Simon Stachurski, Jimmy Gannon

Celtic met with league leaders Ballymoe under lights at Glenamaddy on Friday night. In what was always going to be a tough game it was hammer and tongs from the word go in a physical but sporting contest.
Ballymoe drew first blood and took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half following some good build-up play on the right flank. Celtic drew level before half time however after Ballymoe failed to clear their lines from a corner.
In the second half both sides had chances to gain full points but a few good saves from the Ballymoe keeper and good defending by the Celtic back four meant the sides finished all square.
With 6 games left it looks like it is between the three top teams. Ballymoe are out in front on 27 points with Celtic trailing on 22. Roscommon are in third spot on 20 but do have the advantage of having 3 games in hand.
Celtic can take heart from the fact that incredibly they have maintained an unbeaten run in the league. They travel to Ballymoe next Sunday (Feb 14th) and will be hoping to go a step further this time. Kick off: 2pm
Full team: Derek Miskell, Kieran Gannon, Ronan Conneally, Sean Kenny, Aaron Hynes, Jason Fannon, Keith Cunniffe, Fergal Donlon, Micheal Geraghty, Freddie Gannon, David Keegan
Subs used: Simon Stachurski, Jarro Placek
The Senior side had to settle for a share of the points as they hosted Rahara at Church Street. Having not played a league game since December 6th the cobwebs were evident in the first half with Celtic lucky to hold Rahara at bay. Some resilent defending and a couple of fine saves from softly-spoken keeper Derek Miskell ensured Celtic were living on a knife edge in the first half. Fans at half time were agreed that Celtic were riding their luck with the score at 0-0.
In the second half the performance improved and Fergal Donlon played a ball in to Freddie Gannon who's shot from well outside the box found the corner of the net for what can only be described as a wonder goal. Feeling the we would never hear the end of Freddie's goal, Micheal Geraghty who put in a superb performance, decided he was not to be outdone and with 15 minutes to go sent a similar shot from outside the box into the top corner of the net.
It looked at though Celtic had done enough but with less than 10 minutes to go Rahara pushed forward and got a goal from a corner. With supporters down near the dressing room reaching for their fags an anxious 5 minutes lay in store. Rahara pushed forward once more throwing the kitchen sink and their keeper upfront. A free kick on the edge of the box swung in and with less than a minute remaining the ball pinged about before ending up in the net.
Celtic felt like this was a game they had lost, however over the course of the 90 minutes a draw was probably a fair result. With 8 league games remaining Celtic are still strong league contenders and continue their unbeaten run since the start of the season.
Full team: Derek Miskell, Fergal Donlon, Ronan Conneally, Sean Kenny, Aaron Hynes, Kieran Gannon, Keith Cunniffe, Micheal Geraghty, Cathal Dowd, Freddie Gannon, David Keegan
Subs used: Jarro Placek, Jason Fannon
Celtic maintained their unbeaten run in the league with a 1-1 draw against a resilent Athlone side. They have now played 9 games unbeaten and are currently in second place on the table. They take on Sligo side Gurteen in the Connaght Cup next weekend. (View map for directions)
In a reversal of the previous week's result, Glen Celtic bowed out of the FAI Junior Cup at Church St on Sunday afternoon. Celtic failed to get going in the first half and found themselves a goal down as Roscommon took the lead with a well taken strike from outside the box. Not long after, Roscommon were awarded a penalty which they converted. Many of the Celtic lads felt the penalty to be dubious to say the least as it seemed little more than a 50/50 challenge.
Celtic improved in the second half and were unlucky not to score when Jason Fannon hit the crossbar. Simon Stachurski had an effort saved but nothing seemed to go right for the Glen lads and the final score finished 2-0. Celtic are now third in the league and have a chance to go back on top with a win next Friday night. Incredibly, of the 35 teams in the entire league they are the only team to remain unbeaten since the start of the season. The management team of Mick Comer and Brendan Mee will be looking to get the team back to winning ways as they play local rivals Ballymoe under lights in Glenamaddy on Friday. Fans are asked to be in their seats for an 8pm kick-off.
Glen Celtic put in a fine performance to beat league leaders Roscommon Town this afternoon in Lecarrow. Although missing a number of regulars Celtic started better and Simon Stachurski found the back of the net with a very well taken finish. Roscommon drew level just before half time from a free kick but Glen were the more determined on the day and two more goals from Sean Kenny and Simon Stachurski put the result beyond doubt. The sides must do it all over again next week when they meet in the cup.
Full team: Derek Miskell, Kieran Gannon, Ronan Conneally, Aaron Hynes, Jarro Placek, Fergal Donlon, Keith Cunniffe, Brian Naughton, Freddie Gannon, Simon Stachurski. Subs: Gerry Davis, Michael Duffy
Glen Celtic continued their unbeaten run as they drew with Shiven Rovers in church st on Friday night. Playing 3 at the back and 3 up-front Celtic created a lot of chances but couldn't get the elusive winner.
Glen Celtic continued their run in the FAI Junior Cup with a 4-2 win over Crumlin. On a wet and windy Sunday afternoon the home fans were treated to some fine football by two very sporting teams. Crumlin drew first blood as they took a 1-0 lead in the second half. However this seemed to more inspire the Celtic lads and not long after they drew level. Two more goals followed before full time to leave the sides 2-2 after normal time. In extra time and with improving conditions Glen Celtic proved to be the more determined as they ran out 4-2 winners.
Celtic were robbed of the three points in round 6 of the Roscommon & District Football League. An incredible Fred Gannon goal (a volley from outside the box) gave Glen a 1-0 half time lead having been the better side in the first half. Both sides had chances in the second half but a most dubious penalty decision allowed St. Johns to grab a share of the spoils. Full team: Derek Miskell, Damian Miskell, Sean Kenny (capt.), Ronan Connelly, Cathal Dowd, Fergal Donlon, Keith Cunniffe, Jason Fannon, Fred Gannon, Simon Stachurski, Yarri - subs Michael Purcell for Cathal Dowd, Declan McCallion for Jason Fannon.
